Oakland Athletics Baseball Blog » Greg Smith http://www.athleticshomeplate.com A blog about Oakland Athletics Baseball Sun, 05 Feb 2012 03:00:07 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.1 A’s trade for Matt Holliday http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-trade-for-matt-holliday/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-trade-for-matt-holliday/#comments Tue, 11 Nov 2008 17:36:40 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/?p=73 The Oakland Athletics and the Colorado Rockies have reached a deal that would send outfielder Matt Holliday to the Oakland A’s. In exchange for Holliday, the A’s would be sending Greg Smith, Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez to the Rockies.

Holliday, playing half his games at Coors Field, has 128 homers and 483 RBIs in five big league seasons. His best year was 2007, when he won the NL batting title with a .340 average and had 36 homers and a league-best 137 RBIs in helping the Rockies reach the World Series.

It sounds like a lot to get Holliday especially when he will be a free agent after the 2009 season. His agent is Scott Boras as well so I don’t think the A’s will have the money to sign him to a long term deal.

What do you think about the deal A’s fans?

A’s beat the Rangers 4-3 in 11 innings http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-beat-the-rangers-4-3-in-11-innings/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-beat-the-rangers-4-3-in-11-innings/#comments Tue, 23 Sep 2008 14:32:22 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/?p=70 On Monday night the Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers played 11 innings with the A’s coming out on top with a 4-3 victory. The A’s had blown the save in the bottom of the ninth inning, so it was nice to see them battle back and still get the victory.

Brad Ziegler blew the save when he gave up a solo home run to Hank Blalock in the bottom of the ninth inning. Alan Embree ended up being the winning pitcher in the game after throwing the tenth inning. Santiago Casilla got his second save of the year when he finished off the Rangers in the eleventh inning. Greg Smith had started the game for the A’s but only lasted five innings as he gave up six hits and two runs.

At the plate for the A’s, Travis Buck had the game winning hit when he singled and Cliff Pennington scored. Pennington also had a rbi single of his own while Jack Cust had a rbi double. There wasn’t much offense for the A’s but on Monday night it was enough to get the victory.

Greg Smith gives up two home runs as A’s lose 5-2 http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/greg-smith-gives-up-two-home-runs-as-as-lose-5-2/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/greg-smith-gives-up-two-home-runs-as-as-lose-5-2/#comments Wed, 30 Jul 2008 13:02:14 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/?p=59 The Oakland Athletics lost to the Kansas City Royals for the second straight game on Tuesday night.  The A’s just couldn’t get much going at the plate against Gil Meche and they will now have to win on Wednesday to avoid the embarrasing three game sweep at home against the Royals.

Athletics starting pitcher Greg Smtih served up two home runs including a three run shot in the seventh inning to John Buck as he took the loss.  Smith is now a terrible 5-10 on the year.  He did only give four hits in his seven innings of action, but two of those hits were home runs and he just can’t do that if he wants to keep the team in a position to win.

Mark Ellis got the A’s scoring started with a rbi single in the fourth inning.  Jack Cust scored on the Ellis single.  In the seventh inning, Bobby Crosby grounded out to the pitcher and Ellis scored the second and final run for the A’s.  The Athletics struckout 10 times and left 11 runners on base in the game.

Hopefully the team can atleast win on Wednesday to avoid the sweep.  Oakland Athletics Baseball

Tampa Bay uses back to back jacks to beat the A’s 4-3 http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/tampa-bay-uses-back-to-back-jacks-to-beat-the-as-4-3/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/tampa-bay-uses-back-to-back-jacks-to-beat-the-as-4-3/#comments Wed, 23 Jul 2008 19:19:49 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/?p=58 The Oakland Athletics couldn’t come back all the way to beat the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday afternoon.  Starting pitcher Greg Smith gave up back to back homers in the fifth inning as he took the loss for the A’s.  I was really hoping the A’s would be able to win on Wednesday as they would have won the three game series on the road.  However that was not the case as the A’s lost 4-3.

Santiago Casilla gave up one hit while only recording one out and was taken out of the game in the 7th inning.  Alan Embree recorded the final two outs of the 7th inning and then Jerry Blevins tossed a scoreless 8th inning.

The A’s had some trouble with James Shields who got the start for the Rays.  Shields tossed 8 1/3 innings and limited the A’s to three runs.  Emil Brown and Carlos Gonzalez both hit solo home runs off of Shields and that was all they had until the 9th inning.  The A’s then scored a run in the 9th inning when Ben Zobrist singled off Troy Percival.  However, Bobby Crosby grounded out with the tying run on first to end the game.

The A’s will now be off on Thursday and then start up a weekend series against the Texas Rangers. A’s Baseball Blog

A’s use three solo home runs to beat the Mariners 3-2 http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-use-three-solo-home-runs-to-beat-the-mariners-3-2/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-use-three-solo-home-runs-to-beat-the-mariners-3-2/#comments Thu, 10 Jul 2008 23:23:24 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/?p=55 The Oakland A’s were on the verge of losing to the Seattle Mariners until the bottom of the ninth inning when they hit two solo home runs to take the game into extra innings.  In the 11th inning, another solo home run won it for the A’s as the they defeated the Mariners 3-2.

Jack Cust and Kurt Suzuki both went deep in the 9th inning that tied the game up at 2-2.  Emil Brown hit his 7th home run of the year in the 11th inning to win it for the Athletics in walk off fashion.  It was a huge come from behind win the the A’s who are now 50-42.

Huston Street recorded the win and is now 2-2 on the year.  Street was the sixth A’s pitcher to see action in the game.  Starting pitcher Greg Smith didn’t allow a run over six innings but did give up four hits.  Santiago Casilla and Alan Embree were the two pitchers that gave up one run each.

The A’s will now start a three game weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.  The series is very big because the Athletics are 4.5 games behind the Angels in the divisional standings.

Greg Smith throws complete game as A’s beat the Angles 4-1 http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/greg-smith-throws-complete-game-as-as-beat-the-angles-4-1/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/greg-smith-throws-complete-game-as-as-beat-the-angles-4-1/#comments Tue, 01 Jul 2008 13:06:11 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/greg-smith-throws-complete-game-as-as-beat-the-angles-4-1/ Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Greg Smith was at the top of his game Monday night as the pitched a complete game four hitter and the Athletics defeated the Los Angeles Angles 4-1.  That was a great performance out of Smith as he limited the great offense of the Angels to only four hits and one run.

Smith is now 5-6 on the season with a 3.44 era.  The only run that Smith gave up came in the fifth inning with Mike Napoli hit a solo home run off him.  Other then that, Smith never really made any mistakes and just let his defense take care of him.

Eric Chavez led the A’s with two rbi which came in the seventh inning a two run single.  Mark Ellis had a rbi groundout in the second inning before Daric Barton singled in another run.  Bobby Crosby scored an unearned run in the ninth inning on an Angels error as well.

Great win for the A’s who are now 45-37 on the season.  Athletics Blog

A’s are held to four hits and shut out 4-0 by the Phillies http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-are-held-to-four-hits-and-shut-out-4-0-by-the-phillies/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-are-held-to-four-hits-and-shut-out-4-0-by-the-phillies/#comments Thu, 26 Jun 2008 13:18:08 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-are-held-to-four-hits-and-shut-out-4-0-by-the-phillies/ Well that is a game that the A’s will need to quickly just forget about.  Wednesday night sure wasn’t the Athletics night as they were limited to only four hits and were shut out 4-0 by the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.  The first four batters of the lineup struggled as they went a combined 0-15 with one walk.

Greg Smith pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up seven hits and four runs.  Smith dropped to 4-6 on the season.  Smith could have tossed a one hitter and gave up one run and he still wouldn’t have came away with a victory in this game though.  That is how bad the offense was.

Chad Gaudin, Santiago Casilla, and Andrew Brown all finished things up after Smith left the game.  All three relief pitchers did a good job and held the Phillies to four runs.

The A’s better gett he bats going on Thursday afternoon or they will find themselves losing two of three to the Phillies.

A’s fall 2-1 to the Diamondbacks http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-fall-2-1-to-the-diamondbacks/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-fall-2-1-to-the-diamondbacks/#comments Thu, 19 Jun 2008 22:48:13 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/as-fall-2-1-to-the-diamondbacks/ The Oakland A’s and Arizona Diamondbacks played a very good baseball games on Tuesay but the A’s fell short as they lost 2-1.  The A’s got good starting pitching but the bullpen couldn’t hold the D-backs down late in the game as they scored the winning run on a home run in the eighth inning.  The Diamondbacks took two out of three agains the A’s in the series.

The A’s sent Greg Smith to the mound to start the game and he threw the first five innings of the game giving up three hits and one run.  Smith did walk three batters while striking out five.  I’m not really sure why he was pulled after five innings but the first two guys out of the bullpen did a good job when they came in.

Brad Ziegler and Alan Embree combined to throw the sixth and seventh innings without letting a run score.  But in the eighth inning, Keith Foulke gave up a home run to Justin Upton that proved to be the game winning hit.  Foulke took the loss the Athletics and is now 0-2 on the season.

Jack Cust had the only rbi for the Athletics when he singled in Mark Ellis in the sixth inning.  The A’s only had two other hits in the game as they really couldn’t get anything going at the plate against the Diamondbacks.

Hopefully the A’s will swing a better bat this weekend when they take on the Florida Marlins.

Browns mistake costs the A’s the game as they lose 3-2 to the Rays http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/browns-mistake-costs-the-as-the-game-as-they-lose-3-2-to-the-rays/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/browns-mistake-costs-the-as-the-game-as-they-lose-3-2-to-the-rays/#comments Wed, 21 May 2008 14:44:04 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/browns-mistake-costs-the-as-the-game-as-they-lose-3-2-to-the-rays/ Emil Brown attempted to make a sliding catch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning but he came up short and the ball got behind him in the outfield and the Tampa Bay Rays scored three runs as they went onto beat the Athletics 3-2.

Definaly not the way you want to lose a game.  Hopefully Brown will bounce back and have a good couple of games here soon.  All he can do is forget about it and go out there and play baseball.

Frank Thomas tried to rally the A’s back with a solo home run in the ninth inning but the A’s couldn’t push across another run to atleast tie the game.  Rajai Davis had the others A’s rbi as he had a rbi single in the fifth inning.

Greg Smith tossed seven innings while giving up five hits and two runs to take the loss.  Smith is now 2-4 even though he pitched well enough to ge a win on Tuesday night.  Tough break for Smith.

One run was charged to Joey Devine in the eighth inning as he pitched in relief of Smith.  Dallas Braden tossed a scoreless ninth inning after Devine exited the game.

A’s RHP reliever Andrew Brown underwent an appendectomy and was placed on the 15-day disabled list to recover from the surgery. The move was retroactive to May 14, one day after Brown last pitched. Oakland recalled LHP Lenny DiNardo from Triple-A Sacramento to fill Brown’s spot.

Athletics lose to the Indians 4-2 as they are swept http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/athletics-lose-to-the-indians-4-2-as-they-are-swept/ http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/athletics-lose-to-the-indians-4-2-as-they-are-swept/#comments Thu, 15 May 2008 19:27:50 +0000 TheSmallBallWay http://www.athleticshomeplate.com/athletics-lose-to-the-indians-4-2-as-they-are-swept/ The Oakland Athletics lost another game to the Cleveland Indians as they lost 4-2 on Thursday.  With the loss, the A’s were swept in the three game series and their record dropped to 23-19 on the season.

Greg Smith lasted only 4 2/3 innings as he gave up seven hits and three runs to take the loss.  Smith had seven strikeouts in the game, but still got hit hard when he did get hit.  Smith is now Santiago Casilla also gave up one run out of the bullpen.

Joey Devine, Chad Gaudin, and Huston Street combined to pitched 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run so atleast they did a good job out of the bullpen.

The A’s only had one run until the ninth inning when they were able to make a little rally get started, but the last two runners were left on base after only one run was scored.  Both runs the A’s got in the game was unearned so no one recorded an rbi.  A wild pitch in the ninth inning and then a run came in the second inning when Bobby Crosby scored on an error when Rob Bowen hit a ball back to the Indinas pitcher and he didn’t make a good throw to first place.
