Oakland calls up two right-handers

The Oakland Athletics have recalled pitcher Ross Wolf and purchased the contract of pitcher Justin James from Triple-A Sacramento. Wolf was with Oakland during July and August, but went three weeks without playing before he was sent down Aug. 21. James has yet to make his major league debut. He was drafted by Toronto in 2003 and played in the Reds organization, too.

Burnett bounces back, Yankees win 5th in a row

A.J. Burnett bounced back from an awful August by pitching six effective innings and the New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 4-3 Wednesday night for their fifth straight win. The Yankees held their one-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East. They'll go for a four-game sweep Thursday with CC Sabathia on the mound.

A’s OF Jackson to have surgery; Buck to minors

Oakland Athletics outfielder Conor Jackson will have sports hernia surgery on Sept. 1 and could miss the rest of the season. Jackson, acquired from Arizona on June 16, is batting .228 with one home run and five RBIs in 18 games for Oakland. He's batting .236 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 60 games overall.

Yankees beat A’s take over first place in AL East

Mark Teixeira hit a three-run homer and Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher also went deep for the Yankees, who beat up on Oakland again in a 9-3 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night. The victory moved the Yankees back into sole possession of first place. Tampa Bay, which lost to Toronto, and New York had spent eight days tied atop the AL East.
