The way Bartolo Colon was dealing, the Oakland Athletics had little chance overcoming the first-inning hole starter Trevor Cahill created. Cahill allowed a homer to Mark Teixeira in a three-run first inning and the A's managed just four baserunners against Colon as they fell to the New York Yankees for the eighth straight time, 5-0 on Monday.

The Baltimore Orioles had Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez reeling in the second inning, with one run in and the bases loaded. A strikeout by J.J. Hardy and double-play grounder ended whatever hopes the Orioles had of getting to Gonzalez early, and they didn't get anything at all against three Athletics relievers during a 6-2 loss on Friday night that ended Baltimore's five-game winning streak.

With two-time All-Star reliever Andrew Bailey set to return from the disabled list any day, the Oakland Athletics made room in their bullpen by sending left-hander David Purcey to the Detroit Tigers on Friday. In return, the Tigers sent infielder Scott Sizemore to the A's. Sizemore was batting .222 in 17 games with Detroit and is expected to report to Oakland's Triple-A team in Sacramento.
