Luckily for him, he finally got a chance to celebrate the way he hoped — helping his Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 4-1. The start of the game was delayed by 2 hours and 42 minutes due to threatening weather, although no rain fell until more than an hour after the scheduled start.

Max Scherzer responded quite nicely to his demotion. Scherzer struck out 14 in 5 2-3 shutout innings hours after he was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, helping the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland Athletics 10-2 on Sunday to end a four-game losing streak. Scherzer allowed two hits, walked four and hit a batter in his first game since he was sent down following a rough opening stretch of the season.

The Oakland Athletics activated pitcher Brian Anderson from the disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers. Anderson had been sidelined since April 25 with elbow and forearm injuries. He entered the game with a 1-1 record and a 2.35 ERA in four starts. The Oakland Athletics placed outfielder Coco Crisp on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. Crisp signed with the A's as a free agent in the offseason, but began the season on the disabled list because of a fractured pinky finger. He was activated on Friday and played in two games, going 2 for 6 as the leadoff hitter, before developing a strained muscle in his chest.
